Ambarish Gupta is the CEO and Founder of Singapore-based cloud telephony startup, Knowlarity Communications. He developed Go-to-market strategies for Fortune 10 technology and insurance companies of the world while working for McKinsey & Company as a Senior Associate in the US.
In his spare time, Ambarish can be found reading, listening to music, or tending to his garden. We asked him 5 questions on startup growth-hacking. And here is what he had said.
1. One advice to Indian startups
Keep an insane amount of focus on product-market fit OR creating value for your customer and monetizing it. It is very easy to say we are investing in 'growth' in a 'hyper funded environment'.
2. What's that one Big Moment that changed the path for Knowlarity?
We struggled for two years until we discovered our product market fit. The discovery came when we were almost out of money and about to close. We discovered that small business in India would buy packaged office number and launched SuperReceptionist product. I think that changed our path.
3. What are the major challenges that Indian startups are facing currently?
Talent: Finding the right talent who is not just seduced by the euphoria of a startup or only thinking of money.
Polarized investor markets - either too much funding which drives certain behaviours or irrationality from you or your competitors or dried up markets. Herd style investing. Things are changing, but fast enough?
4. 2 tips on growth hacking
Strategic Relationships: Find a partner and over invest in creating a win-win for both of you, even if a little more biased to their side. Might eat margin, but will create growth without any of your costs or capacity restrictions.
Social Media: For consumer products, ride the wave on hot topics in social media and put in a plug of your product (e.g. Pic sharing: share topical pics which are embedded with links/ name of your product).
